On August 7th at 19:12 UTC, we experienced an outage with our hosting provider, Vercel. This led to many of our users getting a 400 BAD_REQUEST error.
The full incident can be found here on Vercels status page.
This is super shitty, for lack of a better word, and I hate knowing that our users got locked out of the platform outside of our control. Let's dig in a little.
As our main hosting provider, they power pretty much our entire front end. While some things would have continued to run, with 400 requests on middleware and edge functions it makes Doras pretty unusable or reachable.
We rely heavily on Vercel and built on top of and utilize a lot of their features. This has been an eye opener.
We've teased about it a little bit already, however now this is a big driver to now leave Vercel. This will allow us to manage our own infrastructure and take some control during situations like this. When an error like this happens with a provider like Vercel, we've no say in the matter. By managing our own infrastructure, we have the control.
